The Studio Group was set up during the 2021-22 season to provide opportunities and facilities for members to develop their knowledge and skills in the use of lights (studio, flashguns and constant-light led panels) and lighting techniques, simple and advanced configurations, for various genres such as portraiture, product, still-life, table-top and macro, etc., both in large and small studio or home environments or at outdoor locations. Previous studio set-ups have included film noir, Halloween, urban grunge and private eye detective, and the group welcomes suggestions and ideas from its members.
You may also have the opportunity to work with both amateur and professional models.
The society has a range of studio equipment including lights (both mains powered and portable battery-powered), modifiers, stands, back-drops and wireless triggers, etc., all of which are available for members to borrow.
In 2024-25 four workshops were held, three with models.
In November we were joined once again by Amina who posed wearing her native colourful Gambian-style dress and then changed to a variety of 1920’s flapper style costumes and accessories, whilst in February a still-life session ran with a variety of sets provided by the attendees.
April saw a welcome return by Miriam, a semi-professional model, who first modelled for us way back in 2016 whilst she was a student in Nottingham, then going on to model professionally, even appearing on a magazine cover. Finally, in May, a new opportunity for a dance photography workshop arose with Michael, a former professional dancer and now a dance fitness instructor.
We look forward to working with them again in future workshops. The group is open to all members, whether or not they have any experience of photographic studios, and or lighting, who are interested in extending and enhancing their photographic knowledge and opportunities. As with other groups, members will be encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences with others, together with discussion and critique of work. The Society has a range of studio lighting equipment available for members to borrow (see below).
These groups are always well attended with enthusiastic contributions from members. Members are often inspired by speakers during the year and the committee can help support the setting up of new groups from time to time to help develop new interests.
