About us
We meet every Tuesday evening at 8pm (7:30pm on competition evenings) from September to June at the Parish Rooms in Tollerton. Our membership includes enthusiasts of all standards from absolute beginners to more experienced photographers as well as some professionals. Our programme for 2018-19, includes social events, practical and technical evenings, competitions, outings and much more.
Rushcliffe Photographic Society is affiliated to the North and East Midlands Photographic Federation (N&EMPF), and through them to the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain (PAGB).
From its early days in 1978 with just 14 members, the Society has become one of the fastest growing photographic clubs in the East Midlands region. With a membership of around 80 enthusiasts from the Rushcliffe and district area, the Society is now also one of the largest in the Region and fulfils its objective of increasing the appreciation and enjoyment of photography. A growing number of our members have gained distinctions with the Royal Photographic Society and PAGB and have also achieved successes in national and international competitions.
Enthusiastic about photography
This is a society that encourages each one of us to develop our skills and interests and we have a number of ways of doing this such as:
Competitions, Visiting speakers across a range of genres, practical evenings where more experienced members are on hand to help others to learn, Saturday workshops, and mentoring to mention just a few.
In October and May we have a photography 'weekend away' - venues have included Northumberland, Anglesea, the Peak District. We also have ad hoc photography days out for example a recent trip to London for street photography at Camden Lock, a visit to Cromford and evening photography visits to the annual Nottingham Lightnight, canal walks.
In 2017 we introduced a mentoring scheme to provide help and guidance to the less experienced from the more experienced members and we continue to build on this initiative. The scheme is open to all members and you can ask any of the committee for information on how you can participate
Each Monday members receive an email entitled Monday Mailing. This provides news on what's happening in the near future and other relevant topics. We also have a Facebook page and Facebook closed groups for members only.
Meet our committee
Roger Johnson: Chairman
I have always been a keen photographer but my interest was raised when my son used his analogue camera to come third out of over 800 entrants in the Vienna Photo Marathon. Joining RPS has seen me raise my game thanks to the guidance a stimulus of people better than myself and their gentle but positive encouragement.
Carole Syson: Secretary
In 2016 I joined Rushcliffe PS, and I find members very helpful, friendly and sociable. I'm learning new skills and knowledge and members are always happy to share their experiences and give advice. Most of all I love macro and landscape photography.
Bryan Browne, Treasurer
I joined Rushcliffe Photographic Society after going to an open evening about 20 years ago and remember being impressed by the quality of images and range of subject matter on show. I think we currently have the most enthusiastic group of members both photographically and as important, socially. This will be my third year as Treasurer having previously been on the committee as Secretary and Competitions Secretary.
Pauline Barrett
I joined the Society in 2013 being one of only a handful of females at the time. Since then the Society has grown and become one of the most active and sociable groups that I am involved in. I have been unable to continue as Chairman due to an unexpected health scare but hope that by still being a committee member I will be able to continue to contribute to the development of the society.
Pat Cathcart
I joined the Society in late September 2016 and didn't know anything about shooting in RAW, how to process an image, or much about the different genres within photography. I've really enjoyed my first two years in the Society and have learnt a lot from the varied and interesting programme the Society offers. I have found club members to be very friendly and approachable. I am sure any new members will feel welcome. As a continuing committee member, I will endeavour to ensure that club members have a great year.
Graham Palmer
Like many dads I was for years the family snapper for birthdays and family celebrations. My wife became interested in photography and I went along with her when she joined RPS, and was immediately hooked. I bought a camera and started to understand how much I needed to learn. From the start I found the Society to be very inclusive and other more experienced members were always encouraging and keen to help me improve. The most important thing for me though is that when I leave the meetings I always find I just want to race out and take great photographs!
Tim Ryan
I've been a keen photographer since the age of 15 and enjoy portrait, architectural and street photography, taking the occasional commission from clients as part of my job running a web development agency. I'm proficient in computer image manipulation, using software such as Photoshop and Pixelmator most days and I'm keen to investigate the potential of High Dynamic Range techniques during the coming months.
