Rushcliffe Photographic Society In Brief

FEELING THE BEAT by Chris Parkes

Once again the Chairman and Committee of Rushcliffe Photographic Society are pleased to welcome you to another year of photography. Our aim is to help one another to get more out of our photography by meeting, discussing and practicing photography with like-minded individuals, developing our practical skills and techniques with our cameras and honing our post-processing skills through workshops, critiques, lectures and taking advantage of other photographic opportunities as they arise.

Our meeting programme runs from September 2017 through to June 2018 and, although regular meetings are suspended for the summer months, we do encourage members to organise activities such as social get-togethers and shoot-outs at interesting venues during this period. Details of these activities are shared by email and are published on our website and Facebook site on a regular basis.

This 2017/18 programme of activities includes our annual club competitions, critique evenings, indoor and outdoor practical sessions as well as a series of interesting talks from some of the UK’s more respected photographers across a range of genres. We have also included two of our popular ‘creative genius’ events into our programme for this season, and for those interested in working towards a Royal Photographic Society Distinction we will be having a LRPS panel evening, with guidance from those of our members who have already succeeded in obtaining an RPS distinction.

For October we’ve arranged for the first of our annual photographic ‘weekends away’. This will be in the Peak District, Derbyshire and includes an opportunity to attend a workshop with a professional landscape photographer. Our second ‘weekend away’ is scheduled for Spring 2018, with the location still to be confirmed. You can be sure that these weekends will give you the opportunity to dedicate some ‘quality time’ to your photography with like-minded individuals. These events have proven to be very popular in the past and we do recommend that you book these dates into your diary and join in the experience.

In 2017 we introduced a mentoring scheme to provide help and guidance to the less experienced from the more experienced photographer members, and we hope to build on this support network over the coming year. The scheme is open to all members and you can ask any of the committee members for information on how you can participate.

The Society’s website (www.rushcliffephotosoc.co.uk) has publicly available content as well as a ‘members only’ section for Society members and our Facebook presence has been growing steadily in recent times with the creation of a number of Facebook Groups which are actively supported by our members:

  • ‘Rushcliffe Photographic Society’ contains general articles and photos posted by members.
  • ‘Rushcliffe Photographic 365 Project’ contains a section where members post one photo each day, with an additional weekly challenge where we suggest a theme and judge each others’ photos.
  • ‘Rushcliffe PS Industrial Architecture’ is specifically aimed at industrial photos with a link to a photo society in Malmo, Sweden.

If you have not already signed up to these channels, please do: Just ask a committee member for assistance if needed.

We hope that you enjoy another exciting year of photography with us!
